Scholarly Article #5

This article mentioned how much technology has grown and how quickly new and better technology is becoming available. I think it is interesting how there have been so many changes in just the past few decades that articles like this are required to help people stay updated. Technology has altered how we communicate to such a degree that society needs outside help to adapt to the changes. This can be viewed as a bad thing. There are good things about technological advances as well. Those improvements have changed how quickly people can communicate with each other and how many people can access information.

  1. I agree that there are pros and cons to technology. On one hand, we rely on technology to communicate-- particularly in relation to mobile devises. Right now, I am using my phone to comment. I am thinking about how many non-renewable minerals were extracted from the ground to make my phone. Unfortunately, one negative aspect of technology use is a societal dependency on new media.

  2. Part of the communication problems we're facing now is the rush to publish news. As in, media organizations are constantly competing to see who can reach the audience (us) first. However, this had lead to errors being introduced, lack of sensitivity, and false news creation. Like when Robin Williams died, his family's request for privacy was disrespected so that some news group could publish aerial photos of the home he died in. Also, this election cycle suffered from false new aplenty, as different politicians were allowed to rant on with no correction to their false information.

Don't get me wrong, I love technology. But I do see that even with the positives (news faster, communicate with people nearly instantaneously, etc), there are some serious downsides to the advancements of technical communication.
